Epco Comer ABS excels in manifold applications

The ease of assembly, toughness and weather resistance of Epco's Comer ABS pipe systems helped Epco win the pipe and fittings supplier contract for a £50,000 series of industrial valve manifolds.

The corrosion resistant Comer ABS pipe system was specified for three separate manifold applications by a specialist water treatment contractor. Each project was constructed using solvent welded joints, in 4-inch and 6-inch sizes.

The first project involved valve manifolds for multi-media filter vessels. The manifolds will ultimately be used for the automatic cleaning of four 3-metre diameter filters, containing sand and anthracite, with flow rates up to 150m3/h. The filters are required for pre-treatment for a reverse osmosis plant for an oil refinery.

The second manifold system was built for a large water softener. The system controls the automatic regeneration of 2.4m-diameter vessels containing softener resin, with flow rates up to 120 m3/h. The softeners are used for wash water at a glass manufacturing site.

A third valve manifold system is attached to carbon filters, in an effluent plant treating contaminated water from a railway maintenance yard. The manifolds will automatically clean two 2.2m-diameter vessels containing activated carbon, with flow rates up to 45 m3/h.

Comer ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) has a number of outstanding properties that make it ideal in these applications. These include high impact strength and ductility, good chemical, abrasion and UV light resistance, non-toxic and non-taint properties and high strain resistance for buried applications. Additionally, high strength solvent weld jointing allows efficient system assembly and modification.

The > Comer range comprises ball valves, non-return, air release and foot valves. These complement the full > Epco range in > ABS, which includes diaphragm and butterfly valves in addition to pipe and fittings. The fittings are available in both metric and imperial sizes.

With accreditation to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and IIP, > Epco Industrial Plastics have extensive experience in supplying the water and wastewater industry, and many others, as a fully independent distributor of > ABS and > PVC. Sizes from ½ ” to 8 ” imperial and 20 mm to 400 mm metric are supplied from stock. > Epco can also design and manufacture sub-assemblies to order.

Established in the 1970s, > Comer built its reputation as an injection mouldings toolmaker before moving into injection moulding of fittings and valves. Now Italy’s second largest producer of > ABS, > PVC, PE and PP pressure fittings, > Comer will soon open a brand new plant to expand its manufacturing facilities. > Comer has ISO 9002 accreditation and has several European quality accrediations for its products including WRAS in the UK.
